£10.6m paid out for Midlands councils accidents and injury claims
Posted by Emily Jones
Trips, slips and falls and other accidents and injury claims have resulted in councils in West Midlands and Staffordshire paying £10.6 million in public liability cases over the last two years.
This is according to data acquired by the Express & Star, which also contained information regarding the incidents themselves.
For example, Wolverhampton City Council gave a motorcyclist £40,000 after his bike was damaged as a result of the build up of metal, rubble and gravel on a road.
And Staffordshire County Council paid out £35,000 for a broken hand sustained through faulty paving.
The majority of these payouts are thought to be the result of solicitors offering to represent people who have been injured on property belonging to a local authority on a no win, no fee basis.
This follows figures from Barbour Environment, Health and Safety indicating that slips and trips are among the most common causes of injury in workplaces, with nearly 11,000 major incidents recorded each year.
