An English teacher has been awarded £150,000 in compensation after being forced to leave her job when nodules appeared on her vocal chords.

Joyce Walter, 50, said they developed because she had to raise her voice to be heard in the classroom over the noise from a children's play area near her school in north-west London.

She underwent months of speech therapy but, even so, is now still unable to speak for more than a short time before becoming hoarse.

"Teaching was my calling, I adored the classroom and miss it so much, but the problems with my voice make it impossible for me to ever go back," she remarked, adding that she now has to think before doing everyday activities such as calling people on the phone.

This follows a personal injury claim made by a woman who said drinking from a bottle of supermarket wine that had a frog in it caused her to experience stomach pains.
