"Cooling off period" for divorce seekers to be recommended

Ylr-news-19264642

A think tank is to recommend that couples seeking to get a divorce have to undergo a statutory "cooling off period".

According to the BBC, a report commissioned by former leader of the Conservative party Iain Duncan Smith entitled Every Family Matters propounds the idea of implementing rules under which a divorce cannot be granted until a three-month period has elapsed.

In addition, the report proposes the establishment of a network of family relationship centres which would provide advice to couples before and during their marriages.

Commenting on people's changing attitudes towards matrimony, Mr Duncan Smith said: "It's ironic really, given the nature of family breakdown around them, they have this incredibly high expectation of it.

"And so the idea of compromise from day one, two living as cheaply as one, seems to have disappeared."

The politician, who is the MP for Chingford & Woodford Green, also stands behind ideas such as implementing tax breaks which promote marriage.
