'Costlier energy plans' sold to consumers

Ylr-news-800057435

Consumers are being sold energy plans that are more expensive than should otherwise be the case, it has been suggested.

Mark Todd, director of energyhelpline.com, suggested that customers should undertake as much research as possible in order to secure a fair tariff.

"There is a lot of evidence that a lot of people have been mis-sold to," he said.

Mr Todd went on to add that "a lot of people are switching to save on energy and then not making any savings".

The expert highlighted the problem that it is often a complicated task to work out the exact nature of a deal.

It could also be argued that companies should begin to use computer devices to carry out price comparisons for people.

Meanwhile, the regulator Ofgem is encouraging customers to ring a hotline if they are worried about the sales approach of domestic suppliers when they arrange energy contracts.
