Consumers are increasingly looking to purchase low carbon vehicles, it has been suggested.

According to Neil Wallis, head of communications at the Low Carbon Vehicle Partnership, there has been a spike in the number of environmentally-responsible models hitting the European market.

He said: "Businesses may well be the early adopters of a lot of these technologies ... But consumers are also increasingly interested in greener vehicles and there are more of them available for consumers to buy."

Mr Wallis added that the rate of low carbon vehicles is rising and should continue to do so.

Regarding the causes of the trend for greener driving, the expert cited regulation such as the Climate Change Act, which may have resulted in cleaner policies from the country's transportation sector.

Meanwhile, recent statistics from Datamonitor suggested that the green purchasing mindset has been shaped in part by the financial crisis and pressure from the government.
