Older workers in the UK are still subject to "huge age discrimination", it has been claimed.

According to investment expert and economist Dr Ros Altmann, retirement laws should be changed.

She stated that the current situation, in which organisations can make staff members give up their roles at the age of 65, are outdated and need to be amended.

As well as meaning many consumers have less money to spend, the law also leads to fewer people paying taxes, she noted.

Dr Altmann added: "Visionary politicians need to lead the way by explaining the benefits of part-time work in later life, encouraging people to stay at work longer and helping themselves too."

The expert's comments come in the wake of the release of new figures from Age UK, which suggest that forcing older workers to retire cost Britain around £3.5 billion in lost economic output over the course of 2009.
