An organisation has emphasised the importance of consumers being aware of their rights concerning their wills.

The Office of Fair Trading (OFT) noted that it is possible for people to appoint either a professional or a lay person to administer their estates in the event of their deaths.

If a friend or family member is chosen, they can seek professional assistance when the time comes if they need it.

Commenting on the issue, director of services at the OFT David Stallibrass stated: "Preparing a will is important to make sure that your wishes are respected after your death."

He went on to suggest that individuals should be able to make an informed decision concerning who it is they opt for to make the executor of their estates.

Mr Stallibrass' comments followed the publication of new guidance on the subject by the Solicitors Regulation Authority.

An independent organisation, the OFT aims to make markets work well for consumers in Britain.
