'More progress needed' in tackling gender pay gap

Greater progress is needed in addressing the UK's gender pay gap, it has been suggested.

Commenting on the issue, Tatjana Hine, vice-president of the World Association of Women Entrepreneurs, said that although female workers have narrowed the margin, the difference in average remuneration levels remains "reasonably wide".

Her comments were made following the publication of an executive summary from the National Equality Panel, which showed that, over the course of the last ten years, the earnings gap has decreased but the large inequality growth of the 1980s has not been reversed.

Ms Hine stated: "The progress should be faster, in my opinion".

However, she acknowledged that women work differently to men, adding: "They don't necessarily wish to do quite so many hours."

If a greater number of women applied to work in the City, the pay gap would reduce because of the high wages that are paid to such employees, she pointed out.
