'Most people' would be pleased if parents gave to charity in wills

Ylr-news-19188424

Most consumers would be happy if their parents included charitable organisations in their wills, new research has found.

Conducted by Remember A Charity, the study indicated that 89 per cent of adults polled would approve of their parents giving money to a charity after they have provided for friends and family.

Meanwhile, 80 per cent of these people retained this view even if the majority of the estate was given away to such organisations.

However, seven per cent of people surveyed reported a belief that giving money to charity was "eccentric".

Professor Cathy Pharoah, an expert on charitable giving at the Cass Business School, commented: "Families are an important place for passing on the values of giving and this research shows that children can feel very proud of their parents' desire to support the causes they care about through legacies."

Figures published earlier this month by Friends Provident suggested that only 14 per cent of adults had talked with their families about their inheritances and were clear about what they can expect to receive.
