ABI urges motorists to be honest with insurers

Motorists have been urged to be completely open and honest about their personal details when taking out insurance cover for their vehicles.

The Association of British Insurers (ABI) has said that thousands of road-users are currently endangering their policies by driving illegally through failing to disclose important information - such as driving convictions - or providing false facts about themselves.

According to the organisation, this could result in these individuals facing a criminal conviction, as well as a "lifetime of more expensive and harder-to-obtain insurance" and they could also find it difficult to access other financial products such as credit cards.

For example, a survey conducted by the ABI found that more than half - 53 per cent - of all drivers believe it to be acceptable to insure a vehicle in the name of a person who will not be the primary user of a car.

Meanwhile, Robin Reames, director at insurance provider swiftcover.com, stated that he agrees with the ABI as such instances only end up increasing premiums.
