A preventable accident at work left a man requiring an operation to amputate an arm, it has emerged.
Coolrec UK - a waste recycling company - has accepted liability for the incident in which Daniel Ali, a process operating professional, got the limb stuck in a conveyor belt at the firm's depot in Essex as he picked plastic off a piece of recycling equipment.
A case heard at Basildon Magistrates' Court has resulted in the organisation being penalised with a £60,000 fine by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) after it admitted breaching article 6 (1) of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974.
Vicky Fletcher, an inspector at the HSE, commented: "This incident was completely avoidable and has left a man in the prime of his life without his right arm."
This comes after the HSE discovered that an accident at work in which Douglas Mowat fell from a cage balanced on a forklift truck left him with ongoing health issues.
