Accident at work leads to horrific injury
Posted by Helen Jones
An accident at work has resulted in a man sustaining a severe injury to his arm in which he nearly severed the limb from his body.
Daniel Gaskin, a furniture assembler who is 28 years old, suffered the problem while operating a piece of machinery he had not been trained to use properly in March 2010 during his duties at the Machine Hire company.
An investigation conducted by the Health and Safety Executive found that Mr Gaskin, who had only been working for the firm for a period of ten weeks at the time, was asked to slice up wooden off-cuts with a specialist saw.
However, it was established that he had received only five minutes training in how to use the equipment safely, which contributed to him almost sawing off his left arm.
Meanwhile, David Head, a Surrey-based bench joiner, recently had a thumb and finger amputated following an incident with a moulding machine.
