Accident at work leads to multiple injuries
Posted by Helen Jones
A man has suffered serious injuries during an accident at work in which he fell more than five metres on to a concrete floor.
Louis Mitchell, a 22-year-old subcontractor from Brighton, sustained a fracture in his neck as well as a broken back, a punctured lung and four broken ribs after a fragile asbestos roof collapsed under his weight as he worked at an industrial estate in the town.
Mr Mitchell had been hired to repair the surface but fell headfirst through the roof when it collapsed.
An investigation conducted by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) found that Andrew Hyder, who employed Mr Mitchell to complete the task, had not provided the worker with adequate equipment with which to carry out his job.
Russell Beckett, HSE inspector, commented: "The dangers of working on fragile roofs are very clear yet companies and individuals continue to take risks and cut corners."
This comes after a farm worker recently sustained several injuries when he fell 12 feet through a roof in East Putford.
