Accident at work leads to severe finger injury

A man has lost part of a finger following an accident at work involving a drilling machine.

The Wigan-based employee, who is 46 years old and has remained anonymous, sustained the injury while working for B&B Group as a manufacturer when he was instructed to drill holes through an iron bar.

His right hand subsequently got caught up in the equipment and, as a result, his index finger was cut off below the first joint while he also suffered a dislocation of his ring finger and lacerations to another digit.

An investigation conducted by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) into the workplace accident found that the man's employer had not installed a special guard around the drill, which would have prevented his hand from going too close to the moving parts of the machinery.

Elsewhere, a 56-year-old maintenance worker recently developed hand arm vibration syndrome after operating as a mechanic for Crewe and Nantwich Borough Council for 25 years.
