Accident at work leaves man with several broken bones

Ylr-news-800441307

An accident at work has led to a man sustaining severe injuries, including fractures to both of his ankles as well as a broken spine.

The unnamed employee, who is 40 years of age, suffered these injuries as well as a broken wrist when he fell eight metres from a church roof he was helping to repair as part of a job for Alliance Technical Services, a building maintenance firm based in Stoke-on-Trent.

A case at Newcastle-under-Lyme Magistrates' Court heard that the man plunged to the ground when the anchor securing his ladders to masonry on the church gave way without warning.

He subsequently had to stay in hospital for a period of three weeks and has not yet been able to return to work.

Keiron Jones - an inspector for the Health and Safety Executive, the recognised watchdog on workplace safety issues - commented: "When carrying out building repairs at height, companies should always ensure the work is properly planned and that ladders are properly secured."
