An employee has had three of his fingers severed during an accident at his workplace in St Helens.

An investigation conducted by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) found that the unnamed man, who is 49 years old, lost the top of three of the digits on his right hand as he attempted to clear a blockage in a piece of machinery at a depot owned by international company Linpac Packaging in the north-west town.

In a subsequent court case, conducted at St Helens Magistrates Court, it was revealed that the man's hand had come into contact with a rotating screw of 1.7 metres in length because his employer had not installed the necessary protective shield on the equipment.

Therefore, Linpac pleaded guilty to breaching clause 11(1) of the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 and was fined £5,000.

Meanwhile, a man recently also severed two of his fingers during a similar accident at a factory in London.
