The widow of a Royal Navy Engineer has blasted government plans to withhold compensation payments to her and other families of asbestos victims.
Eileen Pearce and her husband Peter battled for half a decade to get the government to approve compensation after Mr Pearce was diagnosed with pleural plaques, caused by exposure to the toxic substance during work refitting ships in the 1960s, This is Plymouth reports.
However, following her spouse's death at age 70 from amyloidosis - a separate condition - Mrs Pearce has now been informed by the Ministry of Justice that the hard-won £5,000 may never be received, as there is no policy in place for awarding compensation to the families of victims.
The 69-year-old called the announcement "wrong", adding: "We fought so long for compensation, but it was about getting recognition more than anything else."
Elsewhere, the UK Health and Safety Executive fined a major pub operator after workmen carrying out repairs on the vacant White Horse pub in Harrowgate Hill, Darlington were exposed to asbestos.
