Assets accrued before marriage 'shouldn't be included in divorces'

The assets accrued by people before they get married should not be included in any subsequent divorce deals, it has been suggested.

According to legal expert Baroness Deech, such wealth should be excluded from agreements under European-style laws, the Times reports.

She revealed that she is "dismayed" that individuals can tie the knot for short periods of time, have no career and then receive millions of pounds.

If the changes she has recommended were made, there would be fewer expensive and hostile legal battles between separating couples and so-called "gold diggers" would be put off getting married for financial gain, she added.

Baroness Deech went on to state: "It sends the message that if you marry a rich man you are made for life. It is highly offensive."

Possible new laws proposed recently by the European Commission under which people getting divorced would be able to choose which country's laws apply to their separations are currently being considered.
