People are increasingly keen to see how the money they would leave in their wills is spent, it has been claimed.

According to insurance group Aviva, so-called 'pre-inheritances' - whereby individuals pass on some of their estates to beneficiaries before they die - are rising in popularity.

The firm - which claims to be the fifth-largest organisation of its kind in the world - found that 46 per cent of adults questioned had received money in the form of pre-inheritances.

This was more than the 37 per cent who reported having been given cash and assets in wills.

Commenting on the issue, Aviva's Clive Bolton said by giving money to loved ones before they die, consumers can have some input into how their money is spent.

"Alongside the obvious benefits of cutting the amount of money liable for inheritance tax, it also seems many benefactors like to see their money being enjoyed whilst they are still alive," he added.
