Britons affected by the disruption caused by Hurricane Irene should check their travel insurance policies to see if they are eligible for a refund.

That is according to Sean Tipton , senior press officer at ABTA - The Travel Association, who has noted that many holidaymakers may be able to get back some of the money they have lost due to being unable to go abroad.

Last week (August 27th), the hurricane moved from the Caribbean up the east coast of the US, which has had a significant negative impact on airline schedules in cities such as New York.

And while Mr Tipton insisted that the "very experienced" officials across the Atlantic will have the situation under control "very quickly", travellers may still be able to get some sort of refund.

"Most travel policies in a situation like this will cover delays caused by bad weather, but will pay a set fee rather than the full value of extra expenses incurred," he added.
