New figures suggest that the BBC is facing a rising number of sex discrimination claims made by employees.

Statistics obtained under the Freedom of Information Act show that there were 12 alleged cases of such unfair treatment over the course of the last year.

In contrast, nine claims were made during the 12-month period before this and three were made in the year before that.

The data was released after the BBC - which describes itself as the world's largest broadcasting organisation - sacked Arlene Philips as a judge on Strictly Come Dancing.

Following the move, it was suggested that the corporation gets rid of women after they exceed a certain age.

However, defending the organisation's record, a spokesman said: "Employing over 17,000 people means that on occasion there will be cases such as this but over the course of three years this represents a very small proportion of our total workforce."
