Building firms handed £125k fine after accident at work

Ylr-news-800042427

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has prosecuted two construction companies for their part in an accident at work which saw a man fall 21 metres.

During a shift at the building site of a hospital in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, Steven McColgan suffered multiple head and body injuries after an unsupported platform broke away.

The city's Crown Court heard that Laing O'Rourke Construction and Expanded Structures were accountable for the incident, as temporary structures had been removed from the area prior to the event.

As a consequence, the companies were fined a total of £125,000 for failing to take the necessary precautions.

Victoria Wise, an inspector for HSE, stated: "Falls from height are the single biggest cause of work-related deaths in Great Britain. It is imperative that such a high risk activity is subject to a high degree of overall management and control."

Previously, the authority dealt with a case which saw ACP, a Workington company, fined £15,000 after a steel cable impaled a worker's leg.
