Businesses have 'lack of understanding about mental health issues'
Employers generally are ill-equipped to deal with mental health issues such as depression experienced by staff, it has been suggested.
Andy Bell, deputy chief executive of the Centre for Mental Health, suggested that many staff members do not know where to turn once they start suffering from anxiety.
He explained: "By and large, employers don't know what to do. Very often it is not talked about and awareness of what depression is ... is very low."
Mr Bell went on to describe the "general lack of awareness" that defines many businesses' attitudes towards the issue, especially when compared with how to deal with scenarios such as the onset of a disease or a sudden injury.
The remarks follow news from Turning Point that money is the biggest cause of depression among UK workers.
In addition, a study by the group showed that women are more likely to experience such issues than men, with 80 per cent claiming to feel anxiety regularly or occasionally.
