More than half of UK consumers view purchasing a home as either critical or very important.

This is according to figures produced by Ipsos Mori on behalf of Scottish Provident, which revealed that 51 per cent of people polled held this belief.

However, the proportion of those aged between 55 and 64 who were of this persuasion was lower, with 44 per cent of consumers in this demographic identifying property ownership as this important.

This represents a fall of 17 percentage points compared with research conducted by the firm in 2003, it revealed.

Some people have been deterred from attempting to secure a home because of the rise in the cost of credit since the onset of the current economic problems, Scottish Provident suggested.

According to figures recently released by the Land Registry, the value of homes in England and Wales rose in October by 0.6 per cent compared with the previous month and stood at £159,546.
