Calls made for changes in divorce laws
Calls have been made for changes in the way divorces are settled in the UK.
According to fund manager Alan Miller, who works in the City of London, the current system is unfair, the Times reports.
Following a separation with his wife, he was ordered to pay £5 million under the terms of a settlement.
This was despite the fact that the pair had no children and had only been married for three years.
He commented: "A handful of judges and QCs have produced quite absurd decisions that have created absolute havoc. The only way to get it cleared up is to go through huge emotional stress and financial cost."
Mr Miller said he agrees with remarks made recently by Baroness Deech, who called for an end to the idea that women deserve half of their husbands' wealth on divorce.
She claimed that divorce laws are unfair to men and have not kept pace with societal changes.
Meanwhile, justice minister Bridget Prentice has revealed that she and fellow politician Lord Bach are discussing ways to increase the take-up of mediation between divorcing couples, the Times reported earlier this month.
