Calls made for expansion of consumer travel cover

Ylr-news-19355599

Consumer travel insurance should be expanded so that people have greater levels of protection while on holiday, it has been suggested.

According to Mike Greenacre, managing director of the Co-operative Travel, if such cover was expanded, it would ensure that consumers do not get "stranded abroad" in the event of either airline or tour operator failure.

He made his comments in the wake of similar calls made by Travel Counsellors, which said that decisive action on the subject is required.

Mr Greenacre remarked: "Research conducted by our in-house team suggests that over 45 per cent of customers believe that if they had, for example, booked a scheduled flight direct then they were protected financially, when in fact they were not."

He went on to advise people to book with companies and brands that can demonstrate they have the necessary protection in place and that have a "proven track record" in the travel market.
