Calls made for extension of motor scrappage scheme

Ylr-news-19349283

Calls have been made by a motoring website for the extension of the government's scrappage scheme.

Introduced to help the UK's ailing car industry, the initative enables dealers to give consumers a £2,000 discount on new vehicles if they scrap their old ones.

In order to qualify for the scheme, which is due to run until March next year, the old cars must have been registered in the UK on or before August 31st 1999.

Meanwhile, the new vehicles must have been first registered in the UK on or after mid-May 2009.

Commenting on its success, Richard Mason, managing director of motoring.co.uk, said: "Having seen such a positive stimulus as a result of the scrappage scheme, I urge the government to follow suit with the French and extend the scheme."

He added that it would be "unwise" to pull the scheme as its continuation is "vital" for the economic recovery of the sector.
