Car manufacturer fined after accident at work

A car manufacturer has been penalised after an accident at work caused one of its employees to sustain fatal head injuries.
Cannon Automotive, a London-based company, has been issued with a fine of £20,000 - as well as being ordered to pay £13,100 in costs - after an incident in which Balbir Rayatt was hit by a steel barrier as he carried out maintenance work at its depot in the Tottenham region of the capital.
Mr Rayatt was operating on a rubber-mixing machine when a heavy steel fabrication beam fell on to him, an accident that led to his death.
An investigation conducted by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) found that his employer had failed to conduct a sufficient risk assessment on this area of its factory and Cannon later admitted breaching the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974.
This comes after Morgans Plant Hire was punished for its negligence following the passing away of employee Keith Nappin in 2007.
