07/03/2011 Accident at work caused 'ongoing health problems'

Posted by Helen Jones

A man was left with ongoing health problems after suffering an accident at work in August 2008.

Bristol Magistrates Court heard that Douglas Mowat fractured his elbow and badly bruised his shoulder in the incident, which saw him fall from a cage balanced on a forklift truck.

He now suffers from ongoing shoulder pain and back problems.

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) prosecuted employer Vincents Car Sales for the accident after finding the company had failed to carry out a risk assessment for certain tasks.

Although the firm has since gone into administration, it was still liable for prosecution due to the severity of the health and safety breaches.

"This type of incident is unfortunately all too common," said HSE inspector Caroline Coleman.

"HSE has successfully prosecuted several companies in relation to similar incidents, some of which have led to serious injuries."

Louis Mitchell, a 22-year-old employed at an industrial estate in Brighton, recently suffered serious injuries after falling more than five metres on to a concrete floor.ADNFCR-2353-ID-800447987-ADNFCR
