Children 'main victims' of contentious divorces

News-no-image-original

Divorces that cannot be resolved amicably mean that one in three children lose touch with a parent, a new survey has revealed.

According to the Times, the study - conducted by family lawyers at Mischon de Reya - found that one in five adults said their primary concern during the process was to make it "as unpleasant as possible" for their spouses.

This often results in young people losing contact with a parent, typically the father.

And a fifth of offspring questioned stated that they "felt used" during the separation, with a third expressing feelings of isolation and loneliness.

Mischon de Reya's survey - the biggest of its kind, involving 4,000 parents and children - was commissioned to mark the 20th anniversary of the Children Act, which was implemented to improve the welfare of youngsters caught up in these situations.

This comes after the Times reported Lord Kerr of Tonaghmore saying that a more collaborative approach to divorce is now being taken by UK couples, with cases being settled out of court in less adversarial conditions.ADNFCR-2353-ID-19466720-ADNFCR
