An accident at work which caused a manual worker serious injuries has resulted in a China clay firm being penalised for its negligence.

Imerys Minerals has been issued with a fine of £30,000 during a case heard at Truro Crown Court after it was decided that it was liable for the severe chest, shoulder and head injuries sustained by Gerald Dahlstrom at the European Milling Centre at Par Docks.

Mr Dahlstrom was drawn into a gap between two conveyor belts at the depot as he loaded bags of China clay and has now not worked for more than a year.

An investigation conducted by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) resulted in the firm in question pleading guilty to breaching section 2(1) of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974.

This follows an incident at a factory in Winsford in which a worker broke his leg, leading to Mitras Automotive (UK) being fined almost £30,000.
