CIPD notes fall in number of people receiving pay rises

There has been a decline in the number of workers receiving pay rises since last year, it has been found.
Research conducted by YouGov on behalf of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) revealed a drop of 17 per cent in the proportion of people being awarded improvements in their remuneration packages this year compared with 2008.
Over the course of the last 12 months, 50 per cent of employees in Britain have experienced a rise, which is down on the 67 per cent recorded last year.
Despite this, the proportion of employees who are satisfied with their pay rise has doubled, the CIPD revealed.
Charles Cotton, reward advisor at the organisation - which claims to have more than 135,000 members - said remuneration enhancements are being appreciated more due to the recession.
He added: "The survey demonstrates the power of a pay rise - and how it is communicated - as recognition of hard work and achievement against objectives, especially as more satisfied employees are less likely to leave."
