Pay awards across all sectors are improving in the UK despite the fact the country is still battling the after-effects of the global economic downturn, new figures have suggested.

According to data published by the Office for National Statistics on the British labour market, total wages including bonuses increased in the first quarter of 2011 by 2.3 per cent in comparison to the corresponding period one year earlier.

Meanwhile, the number of people in employment also climbed slightly in the opening three-month timeframe of this year when looked at against the closing quarter of 2010.

And Dr John Philpott, chief economic adviser at the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development, believes such figures are "remarkably good" being as the nation's economy is still "passing through a period of fragile recovery and fiscal austerity".

However, he added "the news is not all good", as displayed by the fact that job vacancies have fallen.
