CIPD: Workplace morale has hit record lows
Posted by Helen Jones
Morale within workplaces across all sectors in the UK is being undermined by decreasing levels of job security and falling living standards.
That is according to research conducted by the Chartered Institute for Personnel and Development (CIPD), which revealed that positive sentiment among workers has dropped to "record lows" as the effects of the global economic downturn continue to be felt.
This quarterly study is based on a sample of some 2,000 employees and found that 37 per cent of people feel their standard of living has fallen over the duration of the last three months.
Meanwhile, 21 per cent believe they are likely to lose their jobs in the near future, with the majority of these being representatives of the public sector.
Claire McCartney, resourcing and talent adviser at the CIPD, observed that leaders must "put even more emphasis during tough times on how they communicate, consult and involve staff".
This comes after Charlie Ball of the Higher Education Careers Services Unit stated that pay rises are being restricted after the slump.
