Compensation claims for work-related disease 'can help'
Posted by Emily Jones
Victims of work-related diseases and their families can benefit from compensation they receive.
This is according to Unison general secretary Dave Prentis, who noted that such payments can help provide resources for treatment and can cover the needs of relatives.
He made his comments in relation to exposure to the hazardous insulating material asbestos.
However, more needs to be done to prevent diseases like this occurring in the first place, he added.
Mr Prentice remarked: "Too many employers put short-cuts before the safety of their staff and many workers still suffer in silence, losing their physical and mental health."
His statement came in the wake of figures released by Unison, which showed that its members received more than £2 million in damages last year as a result of asbestos-related problems.
There are a number of medical problems associated with the substance - which in the past was used in the construction industry - including mesothelioma, pleural plaques and asbestosis.
