A man who claims the hygiene standards in the hotel he stayed in while abroad were not up to the necessary levels is seeking compensation.

Pensioner Neville Fisher travelled to the Hotel Los Gigantes in Tenerife, WalesOnline reports.

He is among a group of people seeking damages after he developed food poisoning.

The 78-year-old claims that once he returned to the UK, he was diagnosed with salmonella.

According to those behind the legal action, Thomson did not ensure proper hygiene standards were enforced and it failed to provide sufficient information about outbreaks of illness.

Mr Fisher stated: "I felt unwell for about a week. I had a swollen abdomen and headaches for a while afterwards."

He added that people had been contracting health problems at the hotel before he went there and warnings should have been provided.

Figures produced by the Food Standards Agency suggest there are around 850,000 cases of food poisoning in the UK every year.
