Compulsory dog insurance plans criticised

Plans to make third-party dog insurance compulsory have been criticised by one organisation.

According to Gocompare.com, they will prove unpopular with dog owners around the country.

The proposals were unveiled earlier this week by home secretary Alan Johnson, who revealed that people will have to take out policies in order to cover the costs of compensation in the event that their animal attacks someone.

He said that, while most dog owners in the UK are responsible, some breed and keep animals with the intention of intimidating others.

Responding to the development, head of home and pet insurance at Gocompare.com John Miles said: "Insurance has many benefits but it is rarely the most effective tool for changing behaviour."

He went on to say that the move will not be welcomed by those who keep dogs as they already spend an average of £677 a year on food, vet bills and other essentials.
