Construction firms 'have a responsibility to protect workers' wellbeing'

It is the responsibility of firms involved in the construction sector to protect the wellbeing of their workers.

This was the message delivered by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) recently following a number of unannounced inspections that were conducted around the country.

Some of these took place in Lincolnshire over a two-day period and the organisation noted that around two-thirds of the businesses that were assessed failed.

In addition, one company is still under investigation with a view to being prosecuted over breaches of safety laws.

Richard Lockwood from the HSE - which exists to protect people from the risks that arise as a result of workplace activities - claimed some companies are putting employees' lives in danger.

He remarked: "[The] HSE will not tolerate poor health and safety standards on construction sites and we will continue to make unannounced visits and take enforcement action when necessary, until the message gets across."
