Consumer rights breached by firm, Ofcom rules
Posted by Emily Jones
Ofcom has ruled that a telecommunications firm has breached the rights of some of its customers.
According to an investigation conducted by the regulator, Continental Telecom misled people in order to get them to switch to it from other providers.
Another transgression made by the organisation was said to be signing individuals up without their informed consent.
In addition, it neglected to tell people about their right to cancel during the switchover process and it abused the trust of vulnerable individuals such as the elderly.
The firm, which has a call centre located in Britain, has a month to comply with the requirements specified by Ofcom in a notification.
Those who suffered as a result of Continental Telecom's actions will be allowed to end their contracts without being charged the additional fees that would normally apply.
If the firm fails to adopt the measures needed, Ofcom could take more action against it.
