As part of Equal Love - a consumer rights initiative organised by lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) campaigner Peter Tatchell - four same-sex couples will apply for civil marriages from today (November 2nd).

Between now and December 14th, four heterosexual couples will also be filing applications for civil partnerships as part of the scheme, which Mr Tatchell has described as a "quest for justice".

He noted that legal action is to be carried out if the people involved are refused in their applications, as "denying them equal treatment is contrary to the Human Rights Act".

Mr Tatchell confirmed it will be argued that bans on gay marriage and straight civil partnerships are "unlawful and unjustified discrimination".

Equal Love - supported by LGBT human rights organisation OutRage! - was launched last week on October 26th with a news conference in London in a bid to secure a change in UK legislation.ADNFCR-2353-ID-800211288-ADNFCR
