Poor customer service in the electricity industry can now result in claims of up to £200 a day, the first time consumers have been able to bill network operators for damages.

Regulator Ofgem introduced this change, which allows people to claim compensation for failures to carry out repairs and connections when they say they will, the Daily Telegraph reports.

Inability to provide connections within an agreed timeframe may now cost companies £10 a day, which could increase to £200 for industrial customers.

Ray Farrow, adviser to the House Builders Federation, welcomed the move, saying those in the industry have been campaigning for this over the last four years.

"They are small amounts of money in terms of the delay that occurs but it's still a move in the right direction," he remarked.

Ofgem itself states that protecting consumers is its "first priority", done by promoting competition and regulating monopoly organisations in charge of electricity and gas networks.ADNFCR-2353-ID-800113703-ADNFCR
