Consumers 'prepared to make fake home insurance claims'
Posted by Emily Jones
Many consumers in the UK would be prepared to make false claims on their home insurance policies, new research suggests.
According to moneysupermarket.com, over 400,000 Britons have already defrauded their cover providers in this way.
In addition, six per cent of people polled revealed they would consider engaging in such behaviour, which was a rise on the five per cent recorded in August last year.
The study also found that 15 per cent of consumers risk not being able to get any money in the event of theft or an accident as they do not have policies in place.
Responding to the findings, head of the price comparison site Julie Owens remarked: "No matter how tempting, fabricating a claim for a payout is not only wholly inadvisable but it is also illegal and you could face being prosecuted as a result."
Recently, AA Insurance noted that there were many insurance claims made in 2008-09 as a result of stolen cars, with more than 19,400 vehicles being taken after keys were obtained in house break-ins.
