Consumers' travel insurance 'necessary'
Posted by Emily Jones
British consumers may like to ensure they take out travel insurance prior to going on holiday, as research has revealed that, in the last five years, 5.1 million adults have had belongings stolen while overseas.
According to Sainsbury's Finance, 1.8 million have had cash taken from them, 1.4 million lost their wallet and 756,000 had a camera robbed.
The approximate average value of stolen possessions is £326, with men more likely to be victims of theft - 2.9 million, or 13 per cent, admitted they had had items taken, compared with nine per cent of women.
Travel insurance manager Scott Gorman noted that people tend to carry valuable goods with them on vacations.
"Before you leave your residency, take time to think if you really need to take each item with you and consider investing in a money belt," he advised.
Similarly, Aviva recently published new guidance for students regarding driving to university so as to protect belongings when packing up a car.
