A mechanical fitter sustained several injuries including a broken back during an accident at work in Suffolk, it has been revealed.

David Minor, who was working as a subcontractor for Ridgeons, a building and timber merchant firm which was established in 1911 and now has 22 depots across the country, fell more than five metres from a crane ladder at the company's base in Sudbury.

An investigation by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) found that Mr Minor, who is now 63 years old, also suffered a smashed heel and a broken ankle as his fall was caused by being electrocuted while he was attempting to fix an overhead crane system.

As a result, Ridgeons pleaded guilty to breaching the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 during a case at Bury St Edmonds Magistrates' Court.

Jonathan Elven, HSE inspector, said: "It is essential for companies to ensure that work undertaken on their behalf by subcontractors is properly managed."
