Cost of dying increasing rapidly, study shows

Planning ahead in terms of the wills and probate process is essential due to the rising cost of dying in the UK, new research has suggested.
A study published by Sun Life Direct - a firm that specialises in providing life cover to over-50s - revealed the average price attached to passing away has now gone up to £7,248 due to the cost of essentials such as a funeral and headstone.
This represents a 20 per cent hike on the figure recorded by the financier four years ago, as well as a £400 climb on that posted in 2010.
According to Sun Life Direct's data, the fact that funerals have risen in cost by 61 per cent over the last seven years is one of the primary factors behind this trend.
Simon Cox, head of life planning at the group, commented: "Many people are sleepwalking into a financial nightmare, leaving end-of-life plans to their families, the state or no one at all ... as a nation we need a wake-up call."
