New proposals by the Office of Fair Trading (OFT) could give online purchasers a better indication as to what rights they have.

The organisation has outlined ways in which industries can react to problems and ensure consumers are given adequate advice when it comes to solving queries.

Noah Curthoys, director of strategy at the group, explained: "The OFT is seeking to facilitate industry-led solutions to emerging problems, respond effectively to rapid change, increase the capability and effectiveness of enforcement, and empower consumers."

In particular, businesses could consider the availability of guidance and how they can enable solutions in this area.

Overall, the OFT highlighted the need to build and maintain levels of trust in online markets by making sure consistency is a high priority.

Recently, the body enforced requirements on the Carefree Group to instruct that its advertisements do not imply or claim its service is free if a fee is payable at any stage.
