Wrongly-issued parking fines of more than £17,000 have yet to be refunded to motorists in one area of the UK, it has emerged.

According to the Staffordshire Sentinel, Stoke-on-Trent City Council made an error whereby it activated pay-and-display machines in the car park at the Dimensions Leisure Centre and Fenton Manor Sports Complex around four weeks too early.

This resulted in many drivers unwittingly contravening regulations, meaning around £18,000 was gained by the local authority through incorrect penalties.

The council then issued an apology and pledged to give out refunds to anyone handed a fine between June 1st and 28th, but the news source noted that just £579 of this sum has so far been paid back as many people cannot claim due to the fact that they have disposed of their ticket.

However, John O'Connell - national research director at the TaxPayers' Alliance, an independent group that lobbies for lower taxes - commented: "[The council] needs to ensure it pays back as many people as possible as quickly as it can."
