A couple are considering taking legal action over a traumatic experience they suffered while on holiday.

David and Christine Smith were staying at a Kenyan beach resort when they were robbed during the night, the Daily Mirror reports.

They were hauled out of bed and threatened with machetes, the publication notes.

Cash, jewellery and mobile phones were taken from them and they were forced to flee and hide in a cave until the morning.

Ms Smith said: "It was absolutely terrifying. One of them came up to my face and snatched my necklace."

They were on a silver wedding anniversary trip at the Cove Retreat near Mombasa - which is located in the south-east of the country.

The pair, who were nine days into their three-week vacation when the incident occurred, have been offered £2,290 in compensation by their travel operator but they consider this to be insufficient and are thinking about suing the firm.
