The likelihood that married couples will separate is reduced if men help out around the home, new research has shown.

According to a study conducted by a team at the London School of Economics, divorce rates are lower among households in which male spouses are involved in domestic chores.

These include such things as cleaning, shopping and childcare duties.

Meanwhile, it was also found that husbands and wives had the least chance of getting a legal separation if the woman did not go out to work and the man participated in the maximum level of tasks at home.

Wendy Sigle-Rushton, who was involved in the analysis, pointed out that economists have tended to focus on the connection between females going out to work and divorce rates.

She added: "In doing so, they have paid very little attention to the behaviour of men. This research ... suggests that fathers' contribution to unpaid work at home stabilises marriage regardless of mothers' employment status."

Recently, the Institute for Fiscal Studies said that marriage itself does little to promote the development of children. Rather it is connected factors such as education that have a bearing.
