Disabled motorists 'to pay for parking'
Posted by Mark Cunningham
Disabled motorists in Stone and Stafford may soon have to pay for parking if proposals from Stafford Borough Council are given the go-ahead.
Residents, businesses and drivers have until October 31st to make their views on the matter known, with blue badge holders set to oppose the plans, the Staffordshire Newsletter reports.
Stafford and District Access Group is to meet with council officials on Monday (October 11th), with chairman Derek Boult calling the development "unfair".
"It would be wrong to penalise disabled people already disadvantaged by non-blue badge holders illegally using their spaces," he remarked.
The draft also indicates that shoppers will be charged for parking during the evenings and on Sundays, as well as considering season tickets in Stone and a pay on foot system at Sainsbury's.
This comes after Raphael Piran, who has cerebral palsy and is unable to reach pay-and-display machines, returned from a cinema trip to find his mobility scooter had been given a car parking ticket by NCP, Cambridge News recently reported.
